the 2022 music longlist
a song from the top 100 artists played in 2022, some stats, surrounding feelings, etc
Almost three weeks A month into 2023 and I finally find some time to collate this playlist. While not necessarily my favourite song from each artist, these were the ones that popped up to me while making the playlist.
2022 was the year I listened to a ton of East Asian and Southeast Asian music, the bulk of the playlist indicating so (43%). There was some drainage this year as well, along with staples that have stood the test of time (s/o Polvo, Deerhoof, Braid, Katie Dey, Regal Lily, among others).
Here is the disparity in scrobbles as the list goes down, with everything past Soumbalgwang following a gentle decline to about 20 scrobbles at #100 band People I Love.
This post serves as an easy (evidently not) first entry of the new year and as personal sticky note on this substack for me to refer to in the future. Below are some categories I came up with, lumping artists together based on surrounding circumstance.

Artists I saw live in 2022 - µ-Ziq, Bladee, HTRK, Katie Dey, Yung Lean, CURB (s/o first show at the Esplanade), Thaiboy Digital, Toner, Soft Blue Shimmer, Pavement, 100 gecs, Ecco2k
Artists I saw prior - John Maus, Hakushi Hasegawa (livestream during covid but i still count it, it was v spiritual), Alvvays, Big Thief (from afar, and i regret), Beach House, Deerhoof (probably top 10 show, watched in Singapore, thank you Bryan)
I’ve taken the top 10 tracks according to lastfm as well, a primer for what ended up being replayed the most this year.
As the only native english speaking artist above, Sofie Royer has all my love with respect to immediately resonant songwriting; scratching my hypnagogic pop adjacent itch that I sought for this year. If I’m not wrong, she’s completing university this year. That makes two of us Sofie.
