Took a week hiatus from the Wednesday and Saturday posts, been working on my assignments. Just submitted two and I find myself gravitating back towards writing here. Glad that I feel this way towards the platform. This should be a quick one.
Phantom Lady (Directed by Robert Siodmak, Produced by Joan Harrison) — Having long been known as Alfred Hitchcock’s protégé, investigating the surrounding wartime context of Phantom Lady helped to illuminate Harrison’s contributions to the project. Spitting in the face of other film noirs of the time, the lead female protagonist Carol is not a femme fatale out to sully the plans of a corrupt private eye. Coupled with Siodmak’s German Expressionist lens, this film oozes suspense. The ending though… blame the Hays Production Code I guess.
SGIFF 2022 Lineup — Had a look through the lineup when I was free this week and I just wanted to share the films I’m keen on catching. Plus linking the lineup here for readers who are interested in attending this year. Only film I watched before was Leonor Will Never Die which I adore. Take from that what you will.
Recommending films to my Dad — Asked over the weekend, I told him about Cooper Raiff’s debut film Shithouse and Natalie Morales’ Language Lessons, among a bunch of other films. The reason why I name dropped these two is cause he watched them and reported back that they were very enjoyable. This made me glad. That is all.
Rex and My Little Airport — Plugging these two bands cause they were instrumental in my workflow last Friday. I’m pretty sure both of them were responsible for the amount of work I managed to cover. Slowcore and Twee. I mean, I’m not that hard to please.
Baybeats 2022 — Don’t really need to explain this. Spotted familiar faces on the Otoboke Beaver livestream. While glad I got to catch them with YL previously, this Baybeats show looked mental.
GOGYO Fitzroy — Had the Karaka-Men, Ryo and I shared Karaage as well. Roy joined shortly after, and we hung out for his birthday. The Karaka-Men was spicy, actually the spiciest thing I’ve eaten since coming to Melbourne. Didn’t realise up till then, how much I missed Singaporean Spicy. Catch me over-eating this holiday when I’m back.
I wonder if I’ll be able to hit Wednesday and Saturday this week.
